What is divestment? And does it work?

From Princeton University in New Jersey to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the same chant can be heard: “Disclose! The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary in scope from school to school. Other students, like those at Cornell University and Yale, are asking their schools to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. Other common threads include demanding universities disclose their investments, sever academic ties with Israeli universities and support a ceasefire in Gaza. Proponents for divestment counter that its value lies in raising awareness and stigmatizing partnerships with targeted regimes or industries.

For South Africa as a whole, three quarters of its vehicle production is exported. At the same time, South Africa's policy paper on EVs is two years behind schedule. "The train (EV shift) is a global one, and it's leaving the station. If South Africa doesn't jump onto the train, it runs the risk of being left behind," Mark Raine, co-CEO Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, told Reuters in an interview. Specifically, South Africa will need to boost local demand by cutting the import tax for EVs, setting up large-scale EV charging stations and investing in skills needed for the new ecosystem that EVs bring, he said.

'Cash-rich' names HSBC named "cash-rich companies relatively immune to rising borrowing rates." HSBC's screens in this category include French luxury goods label Hermes International , with a net debt of 9,222 euros ($9,834.11), British food processing company Associated British Foods (net debt of 1,709.39 euros) and Swiss biotech player Bachem Holding (net debt of 271.15 euros). The logo of Mercedes-Benz is seen outside a Mercedes-Benz car dealer in Brussels, Belgium June 1, 2023. In the letter published on DUH's website, the KBA referred to three devices found in cars produced under the Euro 6 standard, the most recent and stringent limits for harmful tailpipe emissions from petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. Mercedes-Benz was obliged to take remedial measures or face an order to remove the cars from the road, it said, based on a ruling by the European Court of Justice that deemed such devices illegal in certain driving conditions. In a statement, Mercedes-Benz said it was co-operating fully with the KBA and that it believed it had already developed the technology required to tackle the issue via software updates. The shift to zero-emission mobility should be viewed as a marathon not a sprint, according to the CEO of Germany's Mercedes-Benz. His comments came as the Mercedes-Benz Group reported earnings for the second quarter this week. "We have a whole host of our, so to speak, first generation electric vehicles on the market now," Kallenius told CNBC Thursday. "So we are bullish on electric vehicles and zero emission driving and we're putting billions into it," he added. "In this case, our production network is flexible to produce both high-tech electrified combustion engines and electric vehicles," he added.

Seven major automakers announced a plan on Wednesday to nearly double the number of fast chargers in the United States in an effort to address one of the main reasons that people hesitate to buy electric cars. The carmakers — BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group and Stellantis — will initially invest at least $1 billion in a joint venture that will build 30,000 chargers on major highways and other locations in the United States and Canada. The United States has about 32,000 fast chargers — those that can replenish a drained battery in 10 to 30 minutes. Surveys show that fear about not being able to find a charger is a major reason that car buyers are reluctant to buy electric vehicles. Sales of electric vehicles have risen quickly in the United States, but there are signs that demand is softening.

Its prior electric model, the D9 multi-purpose vehicle, claims more than 10,000 sales a month since since March. Offshore yuan notes have reached a record issuance, as foreign borrowers take advantage of China's lower rates. So far this year, $10.4 billion worth of so-called panda bonds have been issued in China by offshore borrowers. According to Bloomberg, international borrowers have issued around $10.4 billion worth of "panda bonds" in 2023, a form of offshore yuan notes that remain within China's domestic interbank market. This year's issuance of panda bonds marks a new high, surpassing the prior record of $10.2 billion for the same year-to-date span set in 2021. That has induced foreign borrowers like the Mercedes-Benz Group and the Hungarian government to take advantage of China's lower rates.
